Notes on the use of youtube within the classroom
Ethical Hints - Do's and Don'ts
What not to do
- play long clips - students become disinterested and the remainder of the lesson will be spent regaining their attention and maintaining classroom management
- use youtube as a 'filler'
- allow students to search youtube without predetermined parameters on their searches - youtube does not have a safe search function - you cannot pick and choose which clips are shown
- search for a clip and play in front of students - youtube clips are not screened for content before its members upload them to the site, and youtube cannot keep track of the millions of uploaded clips daily. Youtube clips are only screened when a member 'flags' the content for being inappropriate.

What you should do
- verify every youtube clip you play in your classroom for educational legitimacy
- preview every youtube clip BEFORE your students settle into a lesson - preferably before the students enter the classroom for the day
- allow students to use Kahootz animation technology, to upload their work to an online classroom blog or wiki site
- use age appropriate youtube clips
- youtube can be a useful tool to simplify difficult learning concepts
- youtube clips can be used to view/experience learning concepts and content that cannot be, or isn't, available in a classroom setting
- teach your students how to use the technology BEFORE allowing them to venture onto the site
- receive parental consent BEFORE using youtube, or similar sites
- be aware of sensitive cultural or emotional issues
- duty of care extends to online activity

Embedding youtube clips within programs other than your internet browser

Kahootz
Kahootz is a great resource where students can create their own short animations. These animations can also be uploaded to a classroom blog site or wiki.

It is a great resource for all primary school stages and for the upper primary units there is a wide range of different resources to teach each unit - for example, spelling activities, videos & animations, work sheets and comprehension activities.
Here is one example from the unit of Antarctica. Please note, you must be a member of Skwirk to view some of the content. Skwirk HSIE Stage 3
