Understanding the Syllabus

Figure 1

The most important aspect of the HSIE K-6 syllabus is that it is inclusive for all learners. It also teaches inclusiveness of gender, Indigenous persons, varying cultures and differing perspectives of a variety of issues. Along with learning about the environment in which they live, students are exposed to literacy learning in different contexts and through different media. The aim of teaching students HSIE is to mould responsible future members of our community, local and global, by not only looking to the past but studying current events and future possibilities for human society.

Purpose of assessing students
Assessing students can occur at different times throughout a unit of work and the purpose of which is to create new or adjust current learning programs for all. Assessing students can be split into three separate categories; from knowledge & understanding, skills and values & attitudes. These categories are evident through every stage and content strand. Students may be able to convey to their teacher what they know through many avenues; assessment may take the form of a written response (research project, quizzes or data collection), a dialogue between the student and the teacher, and quite often teachers can assess students through observations of their day to day interactions with their peers and the environment around them.

The assessment process is also useful for teachers to gather information to contribute to their ongoing evaluations of their practice. Teacher evaluations are used to judge the effectivness of how they teach, the programs they teach, the resources used to teach, the assessments they bring in and their own development as a teacher on the whole.
